Puzzlement: A Show to Observe (July 2026)
Exhibited at the Golden Triangle Mall’s “Center Court” in Denton, TX

Curated by Jordan Black & Meredith Cawley, Puzzlement: A Show to Observe presented artworks in a non-traditional public space to encourage careful observation and interactivity. With artworks installed among large, artificial trees, a platformed stage that can be entered from multiple directions, and an astroturf hillside, the “Center Court” at the Golden Triangle Mall offers a unique viewing experience, and many creative curatorial possibilities.

The selected artworks fit multiple criteria, including:

Small, minute details to be discovered through deeper examination in sculpture, fiber works, and illustration
Unique installation that engaged with Center Court’s architecture, such as being hidden in/on trees, floors, and walls
Invitation to interact and play among the works, including mural-like hop-scotch and colorful photo-standees

Social Media Promotion, including the title page of the Puzzlement Book designed by Jordan Black.

It was a unique challenge to curate a show that might entice viewers to slow down and question, while also considering the public space’s architectural character. A distinct curatorial challenge that had to be considered was the understanding that finite and delicate artworks would be on display to the general public in a space whose traffic is difficult to predict and control. To ensure the safety of the work, while maintaining free-roaming in the space, works were strategically placed, and sometimes protected behind secure, decorative stanchions.

Alongside curating the arrangement of works, Black illustrated and designed an instructional booklet that would provide information about the artists, slow-looking exercises, and a list of small details to seek out within the exhibit. The book was accessed by the public using a QR code that was on display from multiple sides of the exhibit area (on laser-cut wood placards hung in the trees, and on the sign-holders that shared information about the exhibited artists).
